Join our team as a Nurse Resident!

The RN Residency Program at Confluence Health is a intensive training initiative designed to support newly graduated nurses in their transition from academic settings to professional clinical practice. The program is also available to support experienced nurses who are interested in learning new clinical skills and specialties.

This comprehensive program blends classroom education with immersive hands-on clinical experiences, providing a structured and supportive learning environment. Participants gain valuable skills and knowledge ultimately fostering their confidence and competence in providing high-quality patient care. The RN Residency Program aims to cultivate a strong foundation for nursing practice and facilitate a seamless integration into the dynamic healthcare landscape.

Residency programs range from 12 weeks to 6 months depending on the specialty, but mentorship continues through the first year. After successful completion, candidates are offered full time staff nurse positions within their unit. All residencies require at least a 1-year commitment to Confluence Health.

Nurse Residency Programs and estimated lengths:
Location: Confluence Health Hospital - Central Campus

Clinical Focus: designed to prepare each nurse for their role in acute care nursing.

Precepted time: 12 weeks utilizing the Married State Preceptor Model, rotate through acute care units (Medical-Oncology, Surgical Orthopedics, Progressive Care).

Education: case-based learning with a focus on advanced patient care and evidence-based practices in acute care nursing, topics include medical, surgical, and cardiac care.

Debriefing: small groups reflect on and discuss their experiences to analyze what went well, identify areas for improvement, and enhance future performance.

Mentorship: 1:1 mentorship program to promote personal and professional development through supportive relationships, begins once the employee moves to their permanent position and continues through the end of the first year.

Clinical Focus: The operating room is a complex and specialized area of nursing that arequires a unique set of skills and competencies. Nurse residents will learn the foundations of Operating Room Nursing with the primary focus as a Circulating RN for surgical specialties like Orthopedics, General, Urology, Gynecology, Cardiovascular, Neuro/Spine, Plastics, Ophthalmology, Podiatry, Trauma, ENT, and Robotics.

Precepted time: the OR Residency is a six-month program where you learn the foundations of Operating Room Nursing under the guidance of experienced OR nurses and preceptors.

Education: The curriculum is built on best practices and current guidelines and delivered through the AORN Periop101 platform, consisting of online modules, videos, and hands-on learning experiences. You also get to experience rotations in partnering departments and roles: Pre/PostOp, PACU, Endoscopy, Sterile Processing, Anesthesia Technician, Surgical Support Technician, and Surgical Technologist. As an added bonus, we are now offering scrub training to OR residents to expand their skill set!

Clinical Focus: The ICU Residency offers a comprehensive and structured learning environment to enhance skills and knowledge in critical care nursing. It will assist the RN in building a solid foundation of clinical competence, critical thinking skills, and confidence necessary to excel in the Intensive Care Unit.

Precepted time: Consists of 60 – 72 hours per pay period, total of 12-18 weeks of precepted orientation shifts in the ICU under the guidance of experienced ICU nurses and preceptors. The beginning of the residency orientation typically starts day/evening shift (0700 - 1930) progressing to evening/night shift (1900 – 0730).

Education: There is a component of classroom time every two weeks reviewing systems paired with approximately 60 hours of online modules. During this classroom time, review of order sets and protocols along with policy and ICU Standards of Care are also reviewed in a group setting.

Debriefing: Multiple group meetings during the residency are scheduled with the ICU Leadership team (Nursing Manager, Supervisor and Educator).

Clinical Focus: designed to prepare each nurse for their role in emergency nursing.

Precepted time: 12 weeks utilizing the Married State Preceptor Model.

Education: case-based learning with a focus on advanced patient care and evidence-based practices in emergency nursing, topics include sepsis/shock, triage, trauma, bedside procedures, neonatal emergencies, and cardiac & respiratory emergencies.

Debriefing: small groups reflect on and discuss their experiences to analyze what went well, identify areas for improvement, and enhance future performance.

Mentorship: 1:1 mentorship program to promote personal and professional development through supportive relationships, begins once the employee moves to their permanent position and continues through the end of the first year.

Clinical Focus: designed to prepare each nurse for their role in neonatal nursing.

Precepted time: 10 weeks acute care + 6 weeks postpartum (mom/baby) + 15 weeks special care nursery, utilizing the Married State Preceptor Model.

Education: case-based learning with a focus on advanced patient care and evidence-based practices in neonatal nursing, topics include high-risk neonates, neonatal resuscitation, stabilization, management of hypoglycemia, neonatal abstinence syndrome, and feeding difficulties.

Debriefing: small groups reflect on and discuss their experiences to analyze what went well, identify areas for improvement, and enhance future performance.

Mentorship: 1:1 mentorship program to promote personal and professional development through supportive relationships, begins once the employee moves to their permanent position and continues through the end of the first year.

Clinical Focus: designed to prepare each nurse for their role in Labor & Delivery.

Precepted time: 10 weeks acute care + 6 weeks postpartum (mom/baby) + 15 weeks labor & delivery, utilizing the Married State Preceptor Model.

Education: case-based learning with a focus on advanced patient care and evidence-based practices in labor & delivery, topics include labor positioning, fetal monitoring, triage, c-section circulation and PACU.

Debriefing: small groups reflect on and discuss their experiences to analyze what went well, identify areas for improvement, and enhance future performance.

Mentorship: 1:1 mentorship program to promote personal and professional development through supportive relationships, begins once the employee moves to their permanent position and continues through the end of the first year.

Clinical Focus: designed to prepare each nurse for their role in pediatric nursing.

Precepted time: 10 weeks acute care + 10 weeks pediatrics, utilizing the Married State Preceptor Model.

Education: case-based learning with a focus on advanced patient care and evidence-based practices in pediatrics, topics include medical, surgical, and respiratory.

Debriefing: small groups reflect on and discuss their experiences to analyze what went well, identify areas for improvement, and enhance future performance.

Mentorship: 1:1 mentorship program to promote personal and professional development through supportive relationships, begins once the employee moves to their permanent position and continues through the end of the first year.
